Two weeks to go!

Here we are at week 9 already!

We have had a busy three weeks with our sharing, math strand and topic.

For math strand we looked at who was the tallest in the class. We lined up on one of the netball court lines and marked how tall everyone was.

We found that Tom was the tallest in the class!

The letter of the week last week was J, and we had some awesome sharing.

For our topic over these last few weeks we looked at what healthy food we would put in our shopping trolleys. All four groups made good choices following our motto of "Healthy Trolley, Healthy Body".

We also started putting together our class skeleton. The children painted cardboard rolls white for the big bones and rolled up paper for the small bones. They then used paper-mache for making the hip bones and the skull.

We are just waiting for the skull to dry before gluing it onto the skeleton, then Sid the skeleton will be all ready for the classroom display.

End of week 6 already!

Room 1 children have been really busy the last two weeks.

We have been reading "George's Marvellous Medicine" in class. We decided to make our own " Marvellous Medicine" from construction materials. There was shampoo bottles and 'chicken pills', paint and perfume, plus many more things that went into the "big pot" of medicine.

In goes the shampoo!

In goes the paint!

In goes the perfume!

In goes the 'chicken pills'!

This week we had a visit from Life Education's Harold. He taught us more about healthy eating and how good food helps our bodies. We got to see a skeleton and help Harold make good food choices for his lunchbox.

Here we are learning about our bones and why our body needs strong bones.

This is where we we choose if a food is a GO, GROW, SLOW or WHOA food.

Here we are choosing what is the best type of food for Harold to have in his lunchbox.

In our maths we have been learning about statistics. We tied this in with learning about healthy food by looking at our lunchboxes to see what types of food we are eating at school.

We made a graph to see how many children in Room 1 had GO, GROW, SLOW or WHOA food in their lunchboxes.

We found all children in Room 1 had some GO food in their lunchbox. That is some fruit or vegetable.
Most children in Room 1 had GROW food in their lunchbox. Milk (provided by 'milk in schools') , cheese, yoghurt, sandwiches and rice crackers.

Some children had WHOA food which they decided they would eat at the end of the day so it wouldn't stop their learning. Ka pai Room 1, well done!

End of week 4 and nearly half way through the term!

Sharing in Room 1 has started well with the letter 'b' and the blend 'sh' for week 3. The children need to find something that starts with the letter or blend of the week and bring it to school on their sharing day.

We also did some work on sorting things that start with 'sh' to go in our 'sh' books.

This week we were lucky to have some time learning cricket skills. Room 1 had a great time warming up with a tag game and practising ball skills.

This term our strand for maths is statistics. We wanted to know who in the class had the longest feet and how many brothers or sisters we had.

More fun and games in two weeks time!

End of week two already!

Two weeks of the term gone already!
Although these last two weeks have been short ones, Room 1 routines are up and running.

Week 2 saw the start of our swimming for this year, much to the delight of all the children.

After missing swimming in term 4 last year, the children were keen to be back in the pool to cool off on these hot summer days.

We kicked off our topic this term (Healthy Bodies) by making a healthy salad. We had a taste of some of the produce we put in the salad.
Some children loved it...
Others were not so sure.....

However, everyone enjoyed helping chop, grate, rip and toss the ingredients together.

Grating carrot and beetroot.         Shelling peas.               Chopping tomatoes and cucumber.

Ripping the spinach.                                                      Chopping the beans.

                                                            Tossing the salad.

The children showed amazing knife skills and a good knowledge on how to prepare the different salad ingredients.

When the salad was finished, we took it outside to have a salad picnic under the tree. YUM!

Welcome to Term 1 2019!

Murtle and I hope everyone managed to get a little break over the xmas period and you are all ready for a new school year.

Murtle had a lovely ten days in Auckland meeting my family and seeing the sights of the big city. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again and have been working hard to prepare the class for the new term.

Our letter/blend of the week sharing will start in week three, I can't wait to see the interesting things that our children bring for sharing.

We will still be having a healthy snack break at approx 10am and a fruit break around 12pm. As this is our hottest time of year, it would be great if Room 1 children could bring a drink bottle (water only please) to school for when they get thirsty during class time.

Healthy bodies is our topic for this term and eating healthy ties in with this.

We will be looking at what is good for our bodies, our brains and our bones!

Our class novel this term is George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. I think we will get some exciting writing and art work relating to this book!

Lastly, we are looking forward to a return to swimming! The pool is looking a lot better than it did at the end of last year, and fingers cross....everything is on track for some water fun this term. Maybe not in the first two weeks, but it will happen.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and see you all on Wednesday 30th January!
