WOW! End of week 6 and fast heading towards the end of term!

Week 5 was a messy week for Room 1 and the rest of the school. We started with a short week because of Queens Birthday weekend, then we had the Teachers strike day, and there was lots of children away across the school due to illness.
However, Room 1 children were still working hard on their maths by practising counting forwards and backwards from 10 to 20.

And other children were learning to count objects by making lots of ten.

Here is Brooke working out how many jelly beans she has by putting 10 into each little container. She found she had 4 lots of 10 and 2 left over = 42.

Our letter and blend for the week were P and cl. As there was a lot of children away, we had a lot less for sharing this week.

A green Plane

A pretty hair Clip

 A porky Pig.

In week 6 we had a few more children back at school (Yay!)
Week 6 sharing was the letter G and the blend gr.

We had a growly face from Skye,

 and a greenstone.

On Wednesday the school had a visit from Elgregoe and his helper, Sue.

Elgregoe had lots of tricks with his animals to entertain us.

And had some help from the audience.

We all had a good laugh, but Elgregoe also had a very good message for us to ...

Hopefully we all remember Elgregoe's words and try to follow them!

On Friday we had a visit from the playcentre. They had come into the school to see what a New Entrant/Year 1 class was like.
Room 1 have been learning about shapes for our strand maths, so we made some play-dough to show and talk to our visitors about shapes we can make, how many sides and corners they have.

"mmm", says Tiaan, "What shape am I going to make?"

Charlie tells mum he is going to make a train shape.

Ethan can't decide which shape he wants to use next!

Harper has made a row of shapes for her friends.

Well done Room 1 for looking after your guests.

Week 6 finished on a high with Room 1 winning the Big Bag Bay Challenge for the week!
Awesome work Room 1 looking after our classroom and bag bay, keep up the great work!

Week 4! Nearly half way through the term!

Room 1 has been busy working on our strand maths and topic over the last two weeks.

For topic we were reading Jack and the Beanstalk. We listened to different stories that had different endings for the Giant.

In week 4 we tried creating our own story of Jack and the Beanstalk using a story board.
First the children drew their pictures, then with the help of Mrs A and Chontal, they wrote their story.

It was a wet day when we were writing these stories and I think that had an influence on the weather conditions in the stories......

The children were also working on art work relating to Jack and the Beanstalk.

First they had to paint the background, then they needed to colour in their characters and glue them onto their background.
Their pictures look amazing, so colourful!

Our sharing has been up and running over the last two weeks.
In week 3 the letter was 'd' and the blend was 'ch'.

Dice

Dog

Charger

Chocolate

In week 4 the letter was 'b' and the blend was 'sh'. However, no one brought in anything to share for 'sh'!
Batman card

Building

Beaker

Ball

Looking forward to next week which is the letter 'p' and the blend 'cl'.

For strand math we are working on shapes. For last Fridays activity we chose 7 different shapes, put them together to make a picture, then drew an outline around the shapes. We then passed the outline and our shapes to another classmate and they had to try and put the shapes together inside the outline.
Lots of laughs all round!

Arranging the shapes

Drawing around the shapes

Fitting the shapes into the outline

Done!

Room 1 have been working hard on keeping our environment clean. Every Friday afternoon we do a walk around the school and pick up rubbish. We want our school to look appealing for visitors and to be a great place to play and learn. The children noticed that some bag bays were a bit messy, so they sent out a challenge to the whole school for the tidiest bag bay!

And the winners for week 4...
Room 1! Yay!!

End of week 4 and nearly half way through the term!

Sharing in Room 1 has started well with the letter 'b' and the blend 'sh' for week 3. The children need to find something that starts with the letter or blend of the week and bring it to school on their sharing day.

We also did some work on sorting things that start with 'sh' to go in our 'sh' books.

This week we were lucky to have some time learning cricket skills. Room 1 had a great time warming up with a tag game and practising ball skills.

This term our strand for maths is statistics. We wanted to know who in the class had the longest feet and how many brothers or sisters we had.

More fun and games in two weeks time!

We are racing through Term 3!

Out topic this term is about Poutini the Taniwha who swims up and down the West Coast.
The children produced some great Taniwha art work to brighten up the classroom.

We also co-wrote a poem about Poutini snatching Waitaki and running away from Taamahua.

Our sharing is still continuing to be very popular with the children. They look forward to their sharing each week.

Last week Mrs Ealam took both Room 1 and Room 2 on the teachers CRT day. She and the children worked hard on a beautiful mosaic art mural about pollution in the sea.

The year is zooming by in Room 1!

We ended Term 2 with some cool rock creations thanks to Mrs Lockhart. Here are some of the lovely creations.

We had a visit from two very cute rabbits, they gave the children lots to talk about on how to look after them.

Our topic for term 2 was to finish learning about our school. Room 1 interviewed the teachers about their jobs, their interests and how long they had been teaching at Awahono. We all learnt how the school was formed and which buildings were the original ones before Ahaura, Totara Flat, Moonlight and Ngahere combined to form Awahono. Room 1 ended their study by making a mural of the school.

Sharing in Room 1 was a highlight each week with the children looking forward to their sharing day. We had some clever ideas for the letter and blend each week.
